  • The main objective of the current paper was to design an automatic arterial puncture sensorial device to facilitate a fast extraction of arterial blood gas sampling from radial artery during Covid-19 pandemic COVID 19 (Coronavirus) pandemic has generated surge demand for essential healthcare equipment, medicines along with the requirement for medical examination equipment Cannulation of the radial artery can sometimes be difficult and require multiple attempts, which prolongs the time required for the procedure and this is not indicated in a COVID-19 pandemic Within this paper we provide a detailed description of a novel device for fast radial artery puncture, developed for use during the COVID-19 Pandemic, when the contact of medical staff with the infected patient must be minimal The proposed concept of the device allows the immobilization of the upper limb of the patient in the appropriate position, facilitates the precise identification of the position of the radial artery even in a situation of low peripheral pulse, allows visualization of the subcutaneous area of the vein plane in the analyzed area to avoid puncturing them and maintains needle orientation at a precise angle to the central horizontal plane of the patient’s forearm Thus, the proposed of AUSmart-Astrup concept creates prerequisites for reducing the time needed for arterial blood sampling, increased the efficiency of the medical procedure, provides ergonomics for the medical staff, and increased safety in the context of COVID-19 pandemic © 2020, The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG
