Furniture designed with a comfortable surface appropriate for supporting the lying body of a person. Beds typically consist of a horizontal surface or support appropriate to hold a mattress and/or mattress and spring-box; they may also include a head and/or foot frame and sometimes lateral rails (i.e., siderails). Beds are mainly used in healthcare facilities (e.g., hospitals, nursing homes) and at home for resting and sleeping and also during recuperation and/or medical treatments. Beds with a fixed height and width and beds that permit the adjustment of the height and contour of the resting surface using mechanical, electric, and/or hydraulic mechanisms are also available. Some beds are intended for particular procedures, such as to provide alternating pressure, for birthing, and to perform radiographic procedures.
