Endoscopes designed for direct insertion through the fundus of vagina (i.e., posterior vaginal fornix) into the peritoneal cavity for visual examination, biopsy, and treatment of lesions of the cavity and organs located in it, especially those in the rectovaginal pouch and the pelvic viscera. Culdoscopes usually consist of an outer sheath, a lighting system, and a working channel for catheters and operative devices; these endoscopes may be rigid or flexible.
