Devices used to apply antiseptic solution to skin that typically consist of a handle or grip on the proximal end and a small pad or sponge at the distal end. Antiseptic applicators are supplied dry and the user must saturate the applicator pad/sponge with antiseptic solution before use. The handle of the antiseptic applicator may function as a reservoir and come pre-filled with antiseptic solution or come pre-attached to an antiseptic solution vial. These types of applicators may be saturated with antiseptic solution by manual activation of the applicator (e.g. by pressing down on one end). Alternately, the antiseptic applicators may be pads/sponges on a simple stick that can be dipped into an antiseptic solution and then used to apply the antiseptic to the incision area. These devices are typically used to disinfect incision areas before major and minor invasive procedures, such as catheter insertion, peritoneal dialysis site cleaning, implantable device placement, prosthetic device placement or removal, interventional radiology procedures, cardiac catheterization lab procedures.
