Detectors designed to locate and record beta and/or gamma radiation emissions primarily from the human body after the injection or ingestion of a radiopharmaceutical (i.e., radioactive drug). These detectors may use analog or digital techniques; imaging or digital (nonimaging) display devices are available. Nonimaging detectors are available as fixed or handheld units while imaging detectors are typically fixed units; both types are usually part of a system capable of detecting and quantifying targeted radiation emissions from specific locations or the whole body using a multichannel analyzer. The collected emission information may then be displayed as numerical data, graphs, count-rate maps, or static or real-time 2- or 3-dimensional images. Beta/gamma radiation detectors are also used to detect radiation from a localized radiation-emitting device or from radioactive material.
