Devices, usually small, compressed sponges or gauze typically made of cotton or cellulose, that are inserted into the ear canal. They are compressed for ease of insertion; they expand once in place and after the addition of medicated ear drops that can be instilled into the ear canal through the ear wicks. They are used to hold medicine, such as antibiotics or antifungals, within the ear canal for patients with otitis externa. They can also be used to help reduce ear canal swelling or to prevent stenosis of the external ear canal following otic surgery. The wicks are single use and disposal and are intended to be changed frequently.
