Neurologic electrodes designed to detect and transmit bioelectric signals for measuring, recording, and/or monitoring the brain function (i.e., electroencephalography); they are typically placed on a patient\'s scalp. These electrodes are usually cup or disk-shaped and are affixed to the scalp by means of a conductive adhesive or gel. The electrodes placed on the scalp are connected to an electroencephalogram (EEG) head box containing electrode lead connectors that amplify the weak electrical signals to be recorded and/or displayed in a graphic form. Careful placement of electrodes is necessary for accurate EEG interpretation. Electroencephalography electrodes are used in observing and diagnosing a variety of neurologic conditions, including epilepsy, related convulsive disorders, and brain death. Dedicated encephalography electrodes to be placed in specific anatomic locations (e.g., nasopharyngeal EEG electrodes) are also available.
