Stimulators that apply electrical stimuli (e.g., direct current, pulses of current) to a nerve, muscle, a discrete area of the central nervous system, or any other tissue. Electrical stimulators basically consist of an energy source (implantable or external) in electrical contact with target tissue via conductive lead wires, a controller or interrupter to prevent excessive energies from damaging the tissues, and an enclosure to prevent the biological environment from damaging the stimulator and vice versa.
