Electrical safety electrosurgical monitors designed to assess the leakage current due to capacitive coupling and/or failure of the insulation of the active electrode of a monopolar electrosurgical unit (ESU) during laparoscopic surgery. These monitors typically consist of a monitoring unit, a conductive shield for the active electrosurgical electrode, and an alarm that is activated when the radio frequency (RF) current exceeds a predetermined value; usually the ESU is automatically deactivated simultaneously.
