Breathing flowmeters designed to measure the maximum rate of expiratory gas flow from the lungs, usually at the beginning of the expiration. These flowmeters typically consist of a manual, handheld instrument with a tube for patient exhalation, an easy-to-grip handle, and a calibrated scale that shows the value of the peak flow. Peak respiratory gas flowmeters are intended for periodic self-evaluation of respiratory status and to help in the treatment of patients suffering from asthma and, less frequently, of patients with chronic respiratory disorders (e.g., emphysema).
