?:definition
  • Flexible sheaths that are designed with one open end into which the tip of a surgical instrument is inserted. These devices are designed to be placed on the tips/edges of surgical instruments to protect them from damage (e.g., during storage or sterilization). Typical surgical instrument tip protectors are made from plastic, paper, or foam and are designed to be placed on the tips/edges of sharp surgical instruments such as forceps, scissors, needle holders, hooks, knives, osteotomes, drills, chisels, K-wires, and fine microsurgical and endoscopic instruments. Certain designs (e.g., vented protectors) have an interior surface with longitudinal channels and ribs that permit the flow of steam or gases over the tip portion of the instrument to sterilize the instrument while the protector is in place. Some tips are color coded to facilitate surgical instrument identification.
