?:definition
  • Devices designed to retain organs (i.e., viscera) and/or omentum (a fold of the peritoneum) in appropriate position while abdominal wounds are sutured, frequently at the close of surgical procedures. These retainers typically consist of sheets of synthetic materials with a central opening; they are placed through the wound internally on the peritoneum. The devices include an attached string with a proximal ring that is kept outside the body during the procedure; after the wound is almost completely closed the foldable retainer is pulled out. Viscera retainers are available as sterile, individually packaged single-use devices in several sizes appropriate for children and adults. The retainers are intended to facilitate and accelerate suturing of abdominal wounds.
