Spectrophotometers that operate in the ultraviolet (UV) and visible spectrum (usually in the wavelength range from 190 to 800 nm). These instruments generally use ordinary tungsten lamps and usually hold rectangular silica or quartz (or glass if wavelength is above 330 nm) cuvettes. Some recording UV/visible spectrophotometers use a double beam that automatically scans the entire spectrum and produces a graph relating the transmittance or absorbance as a function of wavelength.
