Sponges designed for use during open surgical procedures in the abdominal cavity. These sponges typically include absorbent prewashed cotton to soak up fluids around the surgical field, keeping the field as dry as possible and allowing surgeons to clearly visualize the area of interest and to apply pressure to help stop bleeding. Sterile and non-sterile laparotomy sponges are available in a variety of different sizes; some laparotomy sponges include detectable (e.g., x-ray elements, radiofrequency labels) components. Laparotomy sponges are intended to control bleeding or to absorb other liquids and to hold organs or other anatomic parts in place.
