  • A wheel is a circular component that is intended to rotate on an axial bearing and are used to support and to provide a means of moving the wheelchair. These wheels can be rotated manually by the user or power-assisted with batteries. Wheelchair wheels are typically between 22 to 26 inches (56 to 66 cm) in diameter. Smaller wheels, typically between 3 and 8 inches (7 to 20 cm) in diameter and between 1 and 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) in width, are sometimes called casters. Wheelchairs typically have two sets of wheels, 2 larger ones and 2 smaller ones. The wheels can be placed on the front, middle, or rear of the wheelchair, depending upon its design.
