  • Diode lasers that generate and deliver their energy to the surface of previously photosensitized tissues. The combined effect of light, sensitizers, and tissue oxygen destroy tissue by a phototoxic effect (photodynamic therapy). These lasers usually consist of a diode laser generator (633 nm wavelength is typical) and microlens or isotropic (spherical or cylindrical) applicators adapted to the absorption of the sensitizers. Photodynamic therapy diode lasers are used to ablate tissue (e.g., malignant tumors) without a significant thermal effect.
