?:definition
  • Umbilical vascular catheters designed for insertion in the umbilical artery and are advanced to locate their distal tip in the thoracic aorta or, less frequently, in the abdominal aorta (usually in a high-level location T5 to T12 or a low level-location L2 to L5). These catheters typically consist of a single-lumen tube or 5 Fr for large infants and 3.5 Fr for smaller ones. Umbilical arterial catheters are used for blood gas monitoring (e.g., blood oxygen), infusion of liquids (e.g., glucose) and medication, and blood sampling; they are sometimes also used for blood transfusion, parenteral nutrition, and hyperalimentation.
