Point-of-care blood gas analyzers that can assess some metabolites as well as measure blood gas, pH, and electrolytes. These analyzers can directly measure pH and partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PCO2) and oxygen (PO2) and concentrations of the most common ions (i.e., sodium [Na+], potassium [K+], chloride [Cl-] and bicarbonate [HCO3-]) and some metabolites such as calcium, magnesium, glucose, and lactate present in whole blood. These analyzers are used for determination of metabolites and to assess abnormal electrolyte levels in the blood; they are also used to determine the patient\'s acid-base balance and oxygen-carbon dioxide exchange.
