Intravascular occluders consisting of microparticles appropriate for vascular embolization. These occluders typically consist of absorbable gelatin-sponge segments and polyvinyl alcohol granules. Particulate intravascular embolization occluders are mostly used for occlusion of venous malformations and lesions in spinal and cerebral vessels (e.g., aneurysms); they are also used in peripheral (close to the tumor) occlusion of selected vasculature-nourishing hypervascularized cancer tumors.
