  • Microspheres designed for vessel occlusion. These microspheres may be manufactured either from ceramic, glass, polymer, or starch; they are available in diameters from 30 to 1,200 microns according to the intended application. Microspheres are usually administered through a syringe or catheter that is placed in the arteries; the blood then transports them to the selected vasculature. Embolization microspheres are mostly used for occlusion of venous malformations and selected peripheral (i.e., close to the tumor) vasculature nourishing hypervascularized cancer tumors (e.g., the hepatic artery for liver cancer); microspheres are also used for uterine fibroid embolization.
