Detectors designed to identify carious tissue in a tooth. These detectors are based on one of several technologies, such as induced light fluorescence (either using a conventional lamp or a laser), electrical resistance, digital radiography, and reflection of acoustic or laser waves. Dental caries detectors are intended for early identification of caries (e.g., occlusal caries) and/or to differentiate between carious tissue and tissue that is stained but appropriate to left in situ.
