Multichannel electrocardiographs (ECGs) designed for recording the variations of the electric potential caused by the electrical activity of the heart muscle, usually detected at the body surface from two or more leads simultaneously that can perform a computerized automated measuring and interpretation of the ECG by averaging multiple cycles of the signal to reduce noise. These instruments include a computerized unit that can process the average of the ECG signals, compare those signals with an internal algorithm, and print out the ECG along with an interpretation that can be used as an auxiliary tool by the cardiologist. Multichannel ECGs are used to diagnose cardiac abnormalities, determine the response to drug therapy, and reveal trends or changes in the heart function; they provide an additional tool for identifying patients prone to ventricular tachycardia. Multichannel signal-averaging electrocardiographs are not intended for a real-time assessment of the electrocardiogram or other cardiac conditions.
