Measuring instruments designed primarily for determining the oxygen saturation in arterial blood (SpO2) by measuring the relative amount of hemoglobin forms (e.g., oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin). These instruments include light sources of two or more wavelengths, usually in the red and infrared spectrum; photo detectors; and probes. Some oximeters can also determine several hemoglobin forms (e.g., carboxyhemoglobin, methemoglobin). In vitro oximeters measure blood samples as laboratory analyzers; pulse and most point-of-care and other oximeters make in vivo measurements and are mostly used as blood-oxygen monitors.
