  • Switches or buttons that can be activated in an emergency, such as a fire or other hazardous situations, to stop or shut off medical equipment or devices in use, in order to prevent injury or damage to persons, machinery, or work in progress. The activation of the emergency stop switch immediately terminates the electrical power supply to the machinery and so halts the functions of a machine. Emergency stop switches can be used by the patient or by health personnel. The stop switch must be released or reset before the device can begin functioning again. They are often colored red and may be lighted to make them easily seen on the machine to which they are integrated; they differ visually from the device\'s on/off switch.
