Depressors designed to displace the tongue by compression, facilitating the examination of the surrounding tissue in the oral cavity during examination. These instruments are typically handheld, slender and straight sticks or blades inserted in the mouth. Tongue examination depressors are usually disposable (i.e., single use) wooden or plastic sticks; less frequently, metal devices (blades) are available for repeated use after sterilization. Disposable sticks may also be used with specially designed stick holders that facilitate their manipulation without directly touching the stick; those holders may include an ejecting mechanism.
