  • Middle-ear surgical burs designed to excavate, cut, polish, shape, and/or remove bone and/or cartilage during middle-ear (endaural) procedures manually performed under microscope visualization (i.e., microsurgery). These burs typically consist of a small shank made of steel or tungsten carbide with a well-differentiated working head in a variety of sizes and shapes (e.g., round, cylinder, conical) on the distal end; a tapered, notched, or elongated proximal end to fit into a very small rotary device; and a neck that connects the shank to the working part. Dedicated middle-ear surgical burs are available for incision of the mastoid bone and for polishing or cutting middle-ear bony structures. Middle-ear burs are usually intended for reuse after sterilization, but disposable (single use) devices are available.
