  • Automated brachytherapy applicators designed to deliver therapeutic radioactive sources to, retrieve them from, and/or hold them in (natural or surgically created) interstices or cavities of the body. These applicators typically include hollow needles, catheters, and/or cannulae and are frequently configured for use according to the treatment site within the body (e.g., brain, bladder, biliary ducts, breast). Some applicators include a catheter with a balloon at the tip that is left in a surgical cavity (e.g., after extraction of a breast lump); several treatments are performed after surgery by introducing a radioactive source (i.e., seed) into the balloon through a catheter for a predetermined period of time. The radioactive source is delivered by a remote afterloading brachytherapy system.
