Laboratory refrigerators designed to prevent ignition of flammable materials (vapors and/or gases) at temperatures between 1 and 10 degrees Celsius (34 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit); the flammable materials may be present outside the refrigerator or the result of vapors leaking from improperly sealed containers inside the refrigerator. These refrigerators\' motors, switches, and thermostats are insulated to prevent arcing that can ignite flammable air-vapor mixtures; insulation prevents explosions inside and/or outside the unit. All explosion-proof refrigerators must be hardwired directly to a power source by rigid metal wires rather than connected by cord-and-plug assemblies. Explosion-proof laboratory refrigerators are used in areas in which a flammable atmosphere may develop; they are usually available in upright and undercounter configurations.
