Eye (ophthalmic) surgery trephines designed to cut and remove circular sections of the cornea (corneal buttons) and/or scleral tissue from a patient or from grafts taken from (cadaver) donors. These trephines typically are handheld instruments with hollow cylindrical detachable blades of different diameters, a circular-saw-like working edge, and a handle or a rotary manually operated or power (e.g., electrical) surgical handpiece. Some trephines include a coaxial piece at the center for guiding purposes. Corneoscleral surgical trephines are used mainly to perform ophthalmic graft implantations and/or to obtain grafts from the sclera of cadaver donors.
