Hospital data management information systems designed to manage the assignment and status of caregiving locations such as inpatient hospital beds, emergency department rooms or \'hall beds,\' therapy bays in ancillary clinics (e.g., dialysis), and infusion chairs used in ambulatory infusion centers (e.g., chemotherapy clinics). These systems typically consist of a combination of hardware and software. The hardware typically includes dedicated network servers and computers; the software consists of a dedicated software package (e.g., bed-tracking) that is able to monitor bed status while actively tracking individual patient activity. This supportive documentation outlines the amount of time elapsed during each segment of the patient care process. It also provides immediate system notifications to housekeeping when a room has been vacated, allowing sufficient time to prepare and clean the bed and/or patient room. Bed management systems provide bed availability reports and real-time alerts, reduce patient wait times, and decrease emergency and/or other department overcrowding, allowing personnel to correctly match patients with the appropriate level of care. They may function as stand-alone systems or may be integrated in a hospital-wide data management information system network.
