  • Implants designed for augmentation and/or reconstruction of an anatomic structure. These implants are usually inserted during plastic and/or reconstructive surgery; they are typically precontoured sections of synthetic (typically silicone) or, less frequently, biologic (i.e., autograft, allograft, xenograft) materials that reproduce the desired external shape of the tissue or anatomic part. Facial implants (e.g., nose, chin, cheek) are intended mainly to improve physical appearance or to correct abnormalities that are congenital or the result of illness or trauma; muscle implants are intended mainly to improve the physical appearance by augmentating the volume of muscles such as the calf, pectoralis, and biceps and, less frequently, for reconstructive surgery after illness or trauma.
