  • Gonioscopes designed for indirectly examining the angle of the anterior chamber of the eye using a cone-shaped contact lens incorporated with mirrors (so that light refracts from the mirror). Indirect gonioscopes usually consist of a plastic, three- or four-mirror contact lens through which the light projecting from the anterior chamber angle structures passes and refracts from the mirrors, a slit-lamp microscope, and an illumination source to obtain a magnified image of the anterior chamber. The instruments are usually one of two types: one with a lens that comes into contact with the central cornea with indentation (indentation gonioscopes) or one with a lens that comes into contact with the cornea without indentation (Goldmann gonioscopes). Gonioscopes are used mainly in the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of glaucoma.
