Plain (nonimpregnated) dressings that combine two or more components of raw materials such as natural fibers (e.g., cotton, alginate), biological products (e.g., collagen), or synthetic materials (e.g., two or more polymers). Combined dressings are intended to maintain a moist environment, absorb wound exudates, prevent contact with bacteria, and promote wound healing; they are used mainly to cover and protect wounds. Frequently available combined dressings include composite and alginate/collagen dressings.
