  • Nuclear medicine study software designed to acquire, process, and archive data and images obtained during studies of the thyroid gland. This software usually works with nuclear medicine workstations; the software may also interact with devices used in the procedures, such as gamma cameras and thyroid uptake systems. The software is intended to work only with one or a few models of nuclear medicine equipment and related devices, usually supplied by the same manufacturer. This also facilitates the processing and/or data interchange with other nuclear medicine workstations and/or hospital information systems. Thyroid function software may or may not be available separate from the nuclear medicine equipment and may be updated and/or upgraded (i.e., through the release of modified versions) during the life of the equipment. Dedicated thyroid function nuclear medicine software facilitates the determination of how active the thyroid gland is; it is used to check the size and shape of the gland and to localize nodules or tumors.
