Tubes designed to access the colon through the rectum for irrigation purposes. These devices typically consist of a single-lumen rubber or plastic (e.g., silicon) tube of 14 to 20 French diameter or larger, about 40 cm (15 inches) long; its distal tip is inserted through the anus and rectum into the colon; the proximal end is attached to an enema bag containing the solution to be infused. Enema colonic tubes are used mainly for lavage, diagnostic, or therapeutic purposes; dedicated colon tubes intended for antegrade colon irrigation (e.g., cecostomy tubes) are also available.
