Computed tomography scanning systems capable of delivering and detecting a cone-shaped x-ray beam. These systems typically consist of: 1) an x-ray subsystem that utilizes a beam which radiates from the x-ray source in a cone shape (i.e., a cone beam) which encompasses a large volume with a single rotation about the patient thus applying a relatively low dose of radiation; 2) a flat 2-D planar detector rather than a curve-shaped detector; 3) image display monitors; 3) a data storage unit; and 4) a computerized subsystem for image processing that is capable of producing high-resolution tri-dimensional (3-D) images reconstructed using dedicated software (algorithms). Cone-beam scanning systems are typically smaller than conventional fan-beam systems; they are frequently intended for use with the patient in a sitting position. Dedicated systems intended for imaging of the head, neck, and teeth are available. Dedicated systems may be also used in other clinical applications such as angiographic studies and to obtain breast images in gynecologic departments.
