Lower-limb orthoses designed for external modification of the structural and/or functional characteristics of the hip joint, providing immobilization and support. These orthoses are usually classified according to the function of the orthoses (e.g., support, therapeutic) and the physical characteristics (e.g., shape, consistency) and/or material used to make the orthosis (metal, plastics or a combination of these). Hip lower-limb orthoses may consist of soft orthoses (e.g., foam wedges) or semi-rigid orthoses that can provide controlled position (e.g., abduction) or movement (e.g., flexion, rotation) during static therapy applications. Hip lower-limb orthoses are intended mainly to provide motion control of the hip movements after surgery; they are frequently used in pediatric patients.
