Hand-finger upper-limb orthoses designed to make possible and/or improve the functional activities of the hands and fingers during common daily activities by providing active finger flexion that makes it possible to grasp objects. These orthoses are prefabricated devices available in several different types, including gloves with elastic strips to improve finger extension; plastic mitts; and splints using rubber bands used to keep the fingers extended and the thumb abducted. Functional dynamic hand-finger orthoses are used by patients that can grasp objects but cannot open the hands or extend the fingers and thumb appropriately, typically after brain traumatic injuries or strokes.
