Upper-limb orthoses designed for external modification of the structural and/or functional characteristics of the shoulder and elbow joints, providing immobilization (i.e., motion control) and/or support to both joints. These orthoses are usually classified according to the function of the orthoses (e.g., immobilization, support, correction) and the physical characteristics (e.g., shape, consistency) and/or material used to make the orthoses (metal, plastics or a combination of these). Dedicated shoulder-elbow orthoses intended for support of very painful shoulder joints and/or for therapeutic treatments after injuries or trauma of the upper limbs are also available.
