Lumbosacral spine orthoses designed for maximum restriction of movements and/or total immobilization (i.e., motion control) of the lumbar and sacral segments of the spine; they may restrict spine segment movements (flexion and/or extension) in the sagittal, coronal, and/or sagittal and coronal planes. These orthoses usually consist of rigid (custom-made and prefabricated orthoses are available) structures typically made of malleable radiolucent aluminum alloys in a variety of shapes and sizes; the orthoses usually include thoracic and/or inter-scapular bands and paraspinal and/or lateral bars. Immobilizer lumbosacral orthosis are intended for long-term control of movement of the spinal segments and for rehabilitation after trauma; dedicated orthoses for movement control and/or complete immobilization in the sagittal (e.g., chairback type), coronal (e.g., Williams) and sagittal/coronal (e.g., Knight) planes are available.
