Systems designed with capabilities to perform cataract extraction using phacoemulsification and vitrectomy. These systems include a hollow probe that cuts and emulsifies the lenses using ultrasonic waves (phacoemulsification); a vitreous cutter; irrigation and illumination systems; cautery capabilities; and a channel for aspiration of lens and tissue fragments. The systems also include a vacuum pump and controls for the power level, irrigation rate, and mode of operation. Laser treatment can also be performed using a laser probe to seal blood vessels in the retina (photocoagulation). Cataract phacoemulsification/vitrectomy systems are used for phacoemulsification and cataract removal in the anterior chamber and also for vitreal/retinal surgery in the posterior chamber of the eye.
