  • Workstations designed to acquire, process, and store data and/or electrocardiographic (ECG) images to facilitate the observation of variations of the electric potential caused by the electrical activity of the heart muscle, usually detected at the body surface. Electrocardiographs are used to study the action of the heart muscle, for diagnosis of specific cardiac abnormalities, and to reveal trends or changes in heart function. ECG workstations typically obtain the data from electrocardiographic electrodes affixed to certain anatomic points of the patient, which transmit the electrical signals to the workstation\'s recorder through a wired or wireless interface. Wireless ECG systems consist of a monitor transceiver that receives data wirelessly from the patient transceiver that is attached to the patient with an armband. ECG workstations typically consist of a high-speed digital computer with a powerful microprocessor, optical/magnetic disks, and input and output devices. A workstation usually follows the instructions of specialized software for data and/or image processing. Workstations are frequently installed as a component of or interact with department and/or hospital information systems, including picture archiving and communication systems.
