Serology reagents intended to detect immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies to Herpes simplex virus serotype 1 (HSV1), a DNA virus of the family Herpesviridae. HSV1 is mainly transmitted by infected saliva. HSV1 causes a variety of diseases, typically nongenital infections, but may cause sexually transmitted genital infections. Activation of latent herpesvirus is associated with some malignancies. Persistence of the virus for the lifetime of the host is common.
