Immunoassay reagents intended to perform qualitative and/or quantitative analyses on a body fluid sample (typically urine) to determine metabolites of aromatic hydrocarbons. These metabolites are usually synthesized in the liver and excreted in the urine. Some metabolites of interest and their main sources are phenol from benzene; hippuric acid and o-creosol from toluene; o-, m-, and p-methylhippuric acids from xylene; and mandelic acid and phenylglyoxylic acid from styrene and ethylbenzene. Reagents used to determine the concentration of these metabolites in urine are mostly used to establish the degree of intoxication due to the exposure to aromatic hydrocarbons, frequently as the result of occupational exposure.
