?:definition
  • Immunoassay reagents intended to perform qualitative and/or quantitative analyses on a body fluid sample (e.g., serum, urine) to determine thiamine (vitamin B1), a pyrimidyl-substituted thiazole, and/or some of its metabolites. Thiamine (and some metabolites) are excreted into the urine by the renal tubules. Measurement of thiamine levels is used to diagnose vitamin B1 deficiency (a disease called beriberi), typically found in diets poor in thiamine, chronic alcoholism, or some inborn metabolic diseases. The functional status of thiamine is usually determined by measuring the vitamin-dependent activity of the enzyme transketolase (TK).
