?:definition
  • Immunoassay reagents intended to perform qualitative and/or quantitative analyses on a body fluid sample (e.g., plasma) to determine a group of biologically active substances mostly found in leukocytes (i.e., leukotrienes) that cause bronchial and other smooth muscle contractions. Leukotrienes are identified by letters from A to E, followed by numbers that identify the quantity of double bounds in the molecule. Some leukotrienes (e.g., LTC4, LTD4, LTE4) are considered mediators of bronchial constriction and allergic reactions (e.g., allergic rhinitis, asthma). Reagents for leukotriene determination are mostly used in provocation tests (e.g., determination of LTC4 in nasal secretions after inhaling allergens); these reagents may also be used for monitoring severity and improvements in asthma attacks (e.g., LTE4 in urine) and to determine LTC4 release for venom (e.g., hymenoptera venom) allergy diagnosis.
