Immunoassay reagents intended to perform qualitative and/or quantitative analyses on a serum or plasma sample to determine atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), a protein typically liberated from the myocardium into the blood as a result of atrial dilation or increased vascular fluid volume. ANP normalizes blood pressure and circulating blood volume by increasing the volume and the excretion of sodium in the urine (i.e., diuresis and natriuresis, respectively) and by regulating the concentrations of some hormones in blood (e.g., aldosterone, antidiuretic hormone). The level of liberated ANP is used in the diagnosis of congestive heart failure.
