Molecular assay reagents intended to identify species of Staphylococcus, a genus of coccoid bacteria of the family Micrococcaceae, by detecting specific nucleic-acid information of the target bacteria. Staphylococci grow in pairs or irregular clusters and include several pathologic species such as S. aureus, S. epidermidis, S. saprophyticus; the most important is S. aureus because of its ability to cause serious suppurative infections, especially in immunodepressed patients, neonates, and the elderly, through damaged skin or in viral infections of the lungs.
