Serology reagents intended to detect antigens to a specific protein with a molecular weight 24 (i.e., P24) present in the surface of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), a retrovirus of the family Retroviridae. Tests to detect antigens to protein P24 are useful in the first period (usually between one and three weeks) after infection, before HIV antibodies are present in blood. HIV is the etiologic agent of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
