Serology reagents intended to detect immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies to hepatitis E virus, an RNA virus of the genus Calicivirus, family Caliciviridae. Hepatitis is a disease characterized by jaundice and the increase of some enzymes in serum (e.g., aspartate aminotransferase). Hepatitis E viruses are transmitted by the fecal-oral route or via contaminated food or water; this virus is endemic in some geographic areas. Hepatitis E virus is especially dangerous for pregnant women.
